At the end of last semester, I was inspired to try lilac polish, but couldn't find a shade that really worked for me.  Luckily, this polish was a recent birthday present and I was eager to try the purple color.  It actually appears greyer in person, but I'm a fan of its not too sweet undertones and it's reminiscent of a dreary London day: even as grey as the sky might be, London is still wonderful and beautiful.

I am a self described nail polish junkie.  My collection of lacquers which I've acquired in all sorts of ways, and the shades range from classic red to punky black and the glitteriest of glitter to the creamiest of mints.

In the polish diaries, I'll let you in on what color I'm currently rocking, so stay tuned (and please excuse my amateur photography skills!).

Hosting the UDress Fall Fashion Event isn't a job for just anyone.  From keeping the crowd entertained to keeping the acts flowing, it takes a certain kind of person to uphold such an event.  So when the time came to select a master of ceremonies for the 2010 event, junior marketing major, Michael Davis aka Mikes Davis definitely fit the bill.

Last month, Michael and I sat down so he could tell me what it was like to host the event and all about his calling for rap.

"Kristin [Quail, event director,] asked me to be a musical guest.  But then a few weeks before the show she called and asked me to host," Michael says.  "It was fun and I had a great time.  I like to talk and I like to perform so this was nice because I got to do both."

In addition to his hosting gig, Michael, who is also one of the hosts of "What in the Hall," on STN 49, got to show off his rapping skills just before the runway show began.

"The first line of any of my raps, I always throw in a free style," he explains.  "I got a list of the stores and the ones I could rhyme well with, I threw in, but I wanted to make it fit with the show."

For Michael, rapping actually came pretty naturally when he began his career in high school.

"My junior year of high school, my boy had a MacBook and it had garage band," Michael says.  "My friends and I would sit in a circle, like on 'That 70s Show,' and we'd all have a verse or we'd make one up on the spot."

From there, Michael found a way to incorporate his new found talent.

"For my final projects in high school, I chose to do raps-even for my AP calculus final," he laughs.  "Come to think of it all of my projects for [high] school were raps."

When Michael came to UD as a freshman, he kept on rapping and started garnering a following of sorts.

"Freshman year I wrote a song called 'So Blazed Out of My Mind,' and performed on STN and free styled it at random parties, and people I never met before would see me and say, 'So Blazed Out of My Mind!'  I was like 'damn!'  I was getting positive feedback," he remembers.

It should come as no surprise that Michael's rapping caught on, as he's invested in his rapping no matter the time of day.

"I fall asleep to music, so I'm thinking in rhythm," Michael says.  "When I'm walking down the street, I'm rapping out loud over a song that I'm listening to.  I sit in class and write rhymes."

Michael, whose interest in music originally began when he started playing trumpet, has career aspirations when it comes to his rapping.

"I want to release a CD.  I don't necessarily want to be famous, but I want someone to say that I influenced them," he says.  "I want my kids to be able to say, 'daddy was a rapper.'"

For Michael, rapping is more than just a way to pass the time or a future job.

"In high school all I could stand to listen to was rap.  I wanted to know what they were saying.  Now nobody understands what I'm saying!" he jokes.  "I want people to listen to it over and over again to understand and think about it.  I want my songs to describe feelings that I can't find in other songs and it's the only way I know how."

So seriously, how AWESOME, AMAZING, INCREDIBLE are our Fall Fashion Event promo poster and invite?  Be on the lookout for our poster all over the UD campus!

With the theme of our issue, Movement, on our minds and inspiration from across the pond, we got to work.  After some planning, we settled on a cast of gorgeous models and began scouting locations.

Shot in and around the bridge next to the train station on South College Avenue (in the blazing sun!), our models really worked it.

These beauties are the fabulous work of Gabrielle Balaban.   The poster and invite were designed by the talented Mara Lindel.

Check out some of the other shots we caught that day and we'll see you on November 20th!

Olsens Anonymous: A Style Blog about Mary-Kate and Ashley PDF Print E-mail

I've blogged multiple times on how much I LOVE Mary-Kate and Ashley.  Don't even get me started--I can recite all of the lyrics to their "You're Invited" Series and I can tell them apart in just about every picture, save for the early Full House days (that's Mary-Kate above, by the way).

ANYWAY, over the summer, I discovered the blog Olsens Anonymous (olsensanonymous.blogspot.com), which provides a catalog of style pictures of Mary-Kate and Ashley.  Updated almost daily, this is a great place to get inspiration or just a daily dose of Olsen.  Even if you don't agree with their clothing choices, they have made their mark on style...and I'm a fan!
