One of the best parts of welcoming in the New Year is cleaning out all of the clutter from the previous year. This past January during winter break I embarked on a much-needed room clean out. By throwing out old school work and boxing up old mementos for basement storage, I cleaned out my living space and in turn brightened my mood as I look forward to collecting new items and memories in the coming year. As a very organized and neat person, I didn’t think I had much “junk” in the first place. However, I was surprised by how much attention I needed to give to my overflowing desk, bookshelf, and closet in particular. Despite annual spring cleaning, I feel like I fail each year to set up a more lasting room arrangement that keeps things just as tidy as the day I reorganized everything. This year I was determined to succeed so I reevaluated my organizational efforts with a little bit of online research and I think I have finally found a solution with some staying power. Instead of keeping documents in pocket folders standing on my desk like books, I switched to a hanging- file system and created more space on the surface of my desk. Every time I get new paperwork, I cannot wait to open up my drawer and see my rainbow bright folders for easy filing.
