Every so often, I feel the need to make some kind of change. This weekend, the extreme summer heat and humidity put me in the mood for a makeover. I was in search of something more manageable that would withstand the hot summer days. I decided I was ready to be rid of my demanding highlights and get back to my natural hair color. However, on my tight intern budget, finding an affordable salon was tricky, especially in New York City! After a little research, I came across a fantastic deal. The Carsten Aveda Institute in Union Square offers relatively low prices for services performed by the school's students. Though slightly skeptical at first, I called and made an appointment for the next day. When I arrived at the salon, I was greeted by a nervous looking student and his instructor. The pair sat with me for nearly 15 minutes and talked about what I wanted and how we should go about achieving it. I was impressed! Though the process was slow (my stylist had to check with his instructor each step of the way), I ended up with a great new hair color, at half the price of my usual salon. It gets even better: I was offered a complimentary manicure while I was waiting for my color to set! If you're feeling brave, call and make an appointment! Here are some of the services offered: Carsten Aveda Institute: (212) 675-4884 http://carsteninstitute.com/ 22 East 17th Street Hair cut: $19 Blow-dry: $17 Color: $38 and up Eyebrow wax: $11 Before ![]() After
