If you looked at my wrist, you'd see what looks like a squiggly elastic bracelet. When you take it off and give it a stretch, it seems to magically morph into a Tyrannosaurs Rex. This strange, versatile, colorful, and fun bracelet is part of a new 2010 trend, Silly Bandz®. Silly Bandz are shaped like anything and everything from giraffes, baseball players, ice cream cones, and shoes. You name it and there is probably a Silly Band shaped like it. In fact, Silly Bandz are so popular, schools across the United States have chosen to ban them. In some cases, they were never allowed in the first place. According to Time Magazine, Silly Bandz became a serious problem throughout the school day. Teachers were frustrated with the trading, showing, and “buying” of the trading resulted in bickering and hard feelings when children were dissatisfied with the results of their trade. One of Delaware’s local schools, The Newark Charter School, followed suit with the Silly Bandz ban. Last semester, I sat down with some school-age children from The Newark Charter School and asked them what they thought about the Silly Bandz craze. Some of the kids, when asked, said the bracelets were a waste of money, and that they wouldn’t even bother wearing them to school. Other kids said that they loved them and found slick ways to trade behind the teachers’ backs. Despite the ban, children continue to buy and sell the highly-demanded stretchy bracelets on school grounds. Silly Bandz may be forbidden during the school day, but it doesn’t seem to hinder their popularity. In fact, Silly Bandz earned over 100 million dollars in revenue this past year alone. The owner of the Silly Bandz franchise plans to make a line of necklaces very much similar to the already-popular bracelets. Looks like Silly Bandz will continue to stretch their way into the imaginations of children all over the nation!
