Think back to the United States Senate races of last Fall. I know it's been a while, but do you remember Delaware candidate Christine O'Donnell? In October 2010, I was one of the lucky people who managed to score a ticket to the televised debate between Democrat Chris Coons and Tea Party member O'Donnell. I attended the debate not only because I love a good verbal sparring, but because I wanted to see this infamous woman in person. In the weeks before, the media reported her views on evolution (it was lacking evidence), her opinions of China (they're plotting to take over America), and that misguided moment when she mentioned witchcraft. Yet the one line that caught my attention and intrigued me the most was when Fox News decreed O'Donnell, "the next Sarah Palin."

The campaign trail ended for O'Donnell in November, but as the 2012 presidential political election heats up this month, that old Fox News phrase is being tagged onto someone new. The comparisons have already started between Palin and Minnesota representative Michele Bachmann, who announced her presidential candidacy during the Republican primary debate in June. The association is not always a positive compliment, as anyone familiar with Palin's many public gaffes can understand, but this season it may be different.

Bachmann, a devout evangelical Christian, wants schools to teach only intelligent design, is a skeptic of global warming, and opposes gay rights with the intensity of deep-set homophobia. Even with these polarizing stances, she is dedicated to education and healthcare reform, and the media named her the winner of the primary debate for her intellect and strong rebuttals. While Bachmann is often called out for her unfavorable views, even the most liberal of political pundits acknowledges her understanding of politics, her charisma, and her chances at making it far on the campaign trail. It seems the areas where Palin fails - public speaking, a working knowledge of the political system - Bachmann excels.

Although Palin is still a powerful force and a very possible presidential candidate, in many American social circles she has been reduced to a running SNL joke - a zany and poorly spoken Tea Party-er at best, and a offensive political threat at her worst. While Michele Bachmann is equally right-winged and possibly even more provocative, she's also knowledgeable, focused, and eloquent. She's not just a replica of Sarah Palin, she's an upgraded edition. Whether you like her politics or not, Michele Bachmann has the potential to leave a very big mark on the 2012 presidential election.
