Dear Caroline,

What do you suggest as an alternative to the shoulder bag?

We have all experienced the ease and security of going out with a shoulder bag. However, I am a bit over the whole look in general, and I feel like there are so many other purse options being neglected. To set yourself apart, I suggest an ultra, over-sized clutch. I have been seeing them everywhere, and they not only hold more than a mini shoulder bag, but they also instantly make you look delicate and ever-so-chic. Try an over-sized clutch of supple leather in a bright hue or shoot for a wilder look with an animal print or studded option.

Dear Caroline,

How can I keep my preppy pieces from looking too stuffy?

Having worn a uniform for twelve years of school, I am very familiar with this problem. I personally have many classic pieces in my closet, including tailored shirts and crew neck sweaters, and it is difficult to make them look modern and young.  To keep from looking too unoriginal, I suggest mixing things up a bit. You can make a classic-prep piece look fresh by adding pops of bright colors with accessories or by mixing textures. Also, try playing with mixed metal jewelry or studs to add some "cool" to your casual prep look.

2.   Embellished Peter Pan collars on..everything

As the weather gets colder and we are forced to transition out of our delicate, open toed sandals and peep- toe heels, it certainly summons one of my favorite times of the year: boot season. Sure, you can find a fabulous pair of boots for just about any type of climate, but there's nothing like that fall feeling of crunching around on some leaves in your favorite pair. But if you, like me, are a poor college student, getting the perfect pair of boots may seem out of your budget. But have no fear! I've searched all over the World Wide Web to bring you boot lovers a dose of the best of fall footwear that will satisfy both your feet and your wallet.

1) Forever 21 Leatherette Over the Knee Boots - $37.80

The soft brown color keeps these boots truly versatile. The rubber sole will allow for just a little bit of added height along with a durable bottom. Wear these boots your way by folding down the top to whatever height you desire, and the zippers are not only fashionable, but functional.

alt

2. Alloy Owen Boot - $29.90

I have a pair of boots similar to these that I practically live in, so I can personally say that there is nothing nicer than strutting your stuff in soft suede. This pair also comes in black and chestnut to truly go with just about anything in your fall wardrobe.

alt

3. Miss Me Women's Ralph Mid-Calf Boot - $59.95

There's nothing that makes a statement more than a powerful pair of combat boots. Not only are these adorable with the multiple silver accents and fur lining under the laces, but they will certainly be useful for the cold weather and snow.

alt

4. Miss Me Women's Riley Boot - $45.95

After finding these beauties, I'm already putting them on my Christmas list. The material is slick yet chic, enhanced by lacing up the back along with a long side zipper. If you aren't a fan of this color, you have other options to choose from. There's nothing stopping your from hitting the trail in this perfect pair of riding boots.

UDress models caught the attention of students in Perkins on Monday November 14th when a spontaneous fashion show occurred. At around 12:07pm, a purple ribbon stretched across the length of Perkins that signaled the start to a short fashion show that featured fashions from Main Street's Moxie Boutique. Four models strutted around Perkins holding a UDress Fall Fashion Event poster and promoting the event. The spectators looked on in surprise and amusement as they marveled at the gorgeous Moxie dresses and learned about the magazine release party on Saturday November 19th.  After a few minutes, the models were gone and the show was over, but UDress was still the talk of Perkins.

If you find yourself waiting in a long line at "Halloween City" this October, cheesy costume in hand and ready to shell out 30 bucks for it, it may be time to consider a new approach to this year's Halloween festivities. We all know that parading around in cute costumes on Halloween serves as an infamous reminder that crisp fall weather has finally arrived.  So why not save your cash and your health and try a few inspired looks using clothes already in your closet? Plus these costumes will be sure to keep you warm!

alt

Try a classic yet eye-catching look inspired by sophisticated ladies like Audrey Hepburn or, for a modern day celeb, Kate Middleton. Audrey's signatures are a black fitted dress (any black dress in your closet will do!), pearls and diamonds galore, sleek black pumps and-here's the key-rock a high bun. Red lips and lady-like makeup complete the look.

alt

Kate always looks fabulous in a simple and stylish dress or pencil skirt. Show off your legs with knee high black heel boots and a shorter hem for the skirt or dress. You will definitely need an accessory for your hair, carefully blown-out hair, gorgeous makeup and an English accent!

Oh, and don't forget the big blue diamond ring.

Throw a chic tailored coat over either of these costume ideas, and you'll be sure dazzle any man you meet this Halloween.

Costume Ideas That Will Certainly Trick And Treat PDF Print E-mail

Halloween is probably one of the absolute greatest days of the entire year. Not only does it give everyone an excuse to dress up in witty, fun costumes, but candy seems to shower down in sheets, covering every inch of the world in pure sugar-y bliss. But, each Halloween we all seem to be faced with a problem. What exactly do we want to portray? Do you want to take the funny route, or what about the cute costume that really will make a statement? How in the world are we supposed to just pick one idea out of the seemingly endless plethora of costume ideas out there? Here are some original and innovative ideas that are quite relevant to 2011 and certainly will leave you remembered as a Halloween legend.

1)      Charlie Sheen: This actor certainly reached a peak celebrity status this year with his infamous lifestyle. Although known for his lead role in the hit series "Two and a Half Men", Charlie Sheen's life outside of the show is really what got people talking this year. Dressing like the one and only Mr. Sheen certainly would embody "winning", as this costume would not only be recognizable, but humorous too.

alt

2)      Rebecca Black: This teen became a YouTube sensation with her hit single, "Friday". Whether you loved it or hated it, being Rebecca Black would certainly get the partygoers talking! In fact, you could even bring a microphone along and sing a few lines from her song, just to fully commit to the costume!

alt

3)      Hashtag: Twitter fever certainly is taking over the Internet, so why not let it reign supreme this Halloween? This costume idea is simple, as all it would take would be a shirt with the '#' mark embellished on it.

alt

Even if you don't decide to use one of these ideas, be creative and think of a unique costume that will allow you to have a great Halloween! Some of the best costumes don't even require spending a lot of money, so don't be afraid to really experiment and think of different ideas! Halloween only comes around once a year, so make the 31st a day to really remember with a fabulous costume!

It's not that I have a problem with your butt. You probably have a very nice one. And maybe in a different setting, I would enjoy viewing it (then again, maybe not). But I don't want to see it while I'm walking around on campus.

Leggings, in general, are fine. What I don't understand is the recent trend of wearing leggings as the bottom portion of an outfit.

"But they're so comfortable and easy to wear," you will say. I understand. At home I walk around naked; it's more comfortable. But it's not appropriate for public. The tight, clingy fabric of leggings shows far too much of your body to be appropriate for public wear. Perhaps I'm a bit old-fashioned, but I think there should be more between you and the world (and my eyes) than a piece of spandex.

No fear leggings fans! Leggings do have a place in fashion, but as an accessory. In other words, leggings should accompany a full outfit, like a scarf or a pair of earrings does-not act as a basic component of the outfit. Think of leggings as thick tights, which is what they essentially are, and wear them accordingly.

With the temperature dropping and winter coming fast, I find myself hoping that we're not on the brink of another "legging season." So, as you make that inevitable choice each girl must make as she gets dressed in the morning, I say to you: I hope you choose pants this time.

Style On A Budget PDF Print E-mail

Life as a college student in the world of fashion can be tough, so here are some shopping tips to follow that will add some spice to your wardrobe and lessen the dent in your wallet:

1)      Shop Around - So many people stick to their favorite stores whenever they want to add something new to their wardrobe. While it is useful that you have found a few stores that fit your taste and style really well, it is always great to try something new. Be adventurous and pick a new place; you may be surprised what you find. And who knows, this new store might have more reasonable prices than your favorite places. Plus, adding variety to the places you shop helps to add another level of diversity to your attire.

2.) There is nothing wrong with shopping in the sale or clearance section. In fact, for a college student on a budget, it is better to do so.  These areas of the stores do not necessarily mean that all of the clothes on the racks are rejects from last season. If you are willing to put the effort into pilfering through them, you will be surprised to see something that catches your eye that maybe you missed before, only this time, it is half price!

3)      Look through your closet. Many of us have things we have not worn in a while but if you try mixing and matching different items of clothing and pieces of jewelry or accessories, you will end up having so many different "new" outfits to wear that on which you did not spend a dime.

4)      This one is risky at times: try swapping clothes with a friend or two. I advise people to select this friend carefully if they choose to go down this path because it could lead to disaster. But if you and your friend do this correctly, it can benefit both of you.

·         First, let each other know what you are willing to share, and what pieces make you more protective.

·         Second, make sure you and your friend are respectful of each other's things. You do not want to find a new tear in your dress next time you decide to wear it just like she does not want to find a big stain on her shirt when she decides to wear it.

·         Third, make sure you both ask each other if it is ok with the other person to borrow a certain item of clothing. As long as you follow these guidelines, you and your friend can double your wardrobe together!
